One of the most exciting updates for the 2021 models of Cadillac CT4 and CT5 is Super Cruise. Utilizing advanced technology, Super Cruise provides the convenience and ease of hands-free driving. Come into Sunset Cadillac of Bradenton to experience this phenomenon for yourself.

The Future Is Now

Offered on Premium Luxury and V-Series trims only, Super Cruise is something to get very excited about. This advanced driver-assist system is currently the only one on the market that is designed for hands-free driving. It comes with automated lane-changing which allows drivers to make highway lane changes simply by tapping on the turn signal.

The innovation is so thrilling, you may almost be tempted to take a nap in the backseat while your Cadillac handles the road. Thankfully, for your safety, that is not possible. Super Cruise equipped vehicles come standard with Cadillac's Buckle to Drive system. This feature prevents the car from being put into drive until the driver's seatbelt is securely fastened.

How It Works

Cadillac Super Cruise automatically controls vehicle speed and steering on limited access highways using adaptive cruise control. As with other assisted driving systems, real-time data is collected from cameras, GPS, and radars. Activating the technology requires a properly equipped vehicle with an active Super Cruise subscription, a working electrical system, cell reception, and a GPS signal. Relying on a plethora of radar sensors and cameras, it provides information from the road to the vehicle and ultimately, back to the driver.

Super Cruise makes use of two types of advanced technology: a driver attention system and precision LiDAR map data. The driver attention system works with a small camera affixed to the top of the steering column that continually monitors the driver. Using infrared lights, it can track whether or not the driver is watching the road ahead regardless of the ambient lighting inside the car.  An acronym of "light detection and radar," LiDAR is a method of measuring distances by illuminating a target with a laser and then measuring the reflection it gives off with a sensor. In the case of Super Cruise, controlled-access highways are precision-mapped by LiDAR.

Safety First

Cadillac Super Cruise is particularly beneficial on long-distance trips where factors like intersections are eliminated from the equation. For the system to function, however, weather and road conditions must be ideal. Inclement weather can block radar sensors, and poorly maintained roadways can cause lane markers to be difficult for onboard cameras to see.

If Cadillac is not confident that the system can handle the driving based on the car's location, Super Cruise is automatically disabled. Situations where this is warranted include approaching a toll booth, a lane ending, or when multiple lanes are split into various highways. Any driving condition that demands more attention than staying between lane lines and at a safe distance from the car ahead will cause Super Cruise to disengage. Approximately one-third of a mile from the cutoff point, the steering wheel lights go from green to red, the driver's seat buzzes, and the dashboard reads, "Super Cruise disengaging. Take back control."
