Cadillac is looking to join the luxury electric vehicle market with the launch of the 2023 Cadillac Lyriq. GM revealed a show car model back in 2020, and since then, other details started to come out regarding the actual production version of the vehicle. Contrary to popular belief, limited changes appeared on the end product. With the Lyriq set to arrive in the spring of 2022, here's what to expect.
The Price, Timing, and General Info of the Release
GM is looking to compete with the likes of luxury brands like Tesla and Audi, and since there isn't anything on the market quite like the Lyriq, they just might. With most companies dealing with a limited workforce and production problems because of the COVID-19 pandemic, GM is actually ahead of the game with their new vehicle release. The automaker plans to turn out deliveries in the spring of 2022, with reservations for the vehicle starting in September.
Those first to scoop up the Lyriq will pay around $60,000, including the delivery fee. Word isn't out yet when the vehicle will be available on dealership lots, but there are usually additional optional upgrades that follow.
New EV Battery Technology With 2023 Cadillac Lyriq
GM is confident about its new line of electric vehicles thanks in part to its new battery technology. In our changing world, much more emphasis gets placed on zero emissions and electric vehicle designs. GM heard those concerns and ran with them. With forecasters predicting electric vehicles to hit over 3 million by 2030, the automaker decided to dip its toes into this new normal and in the meantime, came up with groundbreaking technology.
During a week-long event back in 2020, GM unveiled its new platform and Ultium batteries. The new technology allows batteries to range in size from 50 kWh to 200 kWh, with the 2023 Cadillac Lyriq clocking in at 100 kWh, capable of driving around 300 miles per charge. 300 miles is more of a conservative estimate, and by the time all is said and done, the automaker expects a low 400-mile range as an easily attainable goal.
Consequently, GM is trying to up the at-home charging game allowing 19 kWh for level 2 charging. DC fast charging rates account for over 150 kWh.
Cabin Interior

Inside the vehicle, there are five seats — 2 in the front and 3 in the back. The front two are separated by a center console. Backseat passengers are in for a delight as they have access to a touchscreen panel. The inside cabin is open and airy with advanced noise cancellation that cuts down on outside road noise.
Of course, one of the most pleasing features of the interior is the 33-inch curved LED display spanning much of the dashboard. Serving as a gauge display and infotainment center, this application offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with a WI-FI hotspot. Unlike Tesla-designed vehicles, the Lyriq's LED display doesn't control everything. There are still tangible controls like volume knobs for those less tech-savvy buyers.
The 2023 Cadillac Lyriq will also have the latest hands-free tech, including driver-assist and safety functions like lane assist. One of the more ambitious pieces of tech incorporated in the vehicle is its remote parking capabilities. Sensors will allow it to park in either a parallel or perpendicular space, either with a driver present or not.
Exterior
When GM went about creating the Lyriq, they were looking for a sleek, modern design complete with advanced technology and aggressive aerodynamics. The Lyriq offers a full glass roof that slopes towards the rear roof spoiler. One of the changes from the original show model is its wheels. The design team made 20-inch alloy wheels standard with the option of upgrading to the 22s.
Although the new electric vehicles don't need a grill, Cadillac added a black crystal shield featuring a new finishing technique to create depth and increase appeal, keeping it as a nod to the classic styling of past Cadillac vehicles. LED lighting illuminates when the driver approaches or leaves the vehicle.
GM's All-Electric Future
The Lyriq may be one of the first in GM's new electric vehicle line, but it's certainly not its last. The automaker committed to producing 30 new EVs by 2025, hoping to positively impact the environment. Mary Barra, CEO of General Motors, believes the auto industry is set to change. No longer will consumers rely on gas-powered vehicles, but they'll start looking for electric ones. With this shift in the market, GM invested $27 billion to produce both electric and autonomous vehicles.
In addition to the 2023 Cadillac Lyriq, two new Chevy Bolts, one redesigned and one a crossover, are set to hit the market in summer 2021. The much-talked-about GMC Hummer EV is set to launch later in 2021 as well. These three vehicles and their close release dates show the wide range GM plans to offer regarding EVs. The Bolts are part of the automaker's affordable EVs, using the current battery technology, not the new Ultium batteries.
GM is also looking to up how many miles their vehicles can travel on a full charge. With the Lyriq clocking in at a conservative 300 miles, the automaker is looking to extend that to 500 to 600 miles in the near future. To do that, they've partnered with SolidEnergy Systems, a lithium metal battery developer with U.S. operations in Boston. The goal is to offer an affordable and efficient battery to add to the next generation of Ultrium batteries.
