General Motors is committed to an electric future and has chosen to demonstrate this using one of its most prominent lines, Cadillac. The brand's first all-electric car is the recently-unveiled Cadillac Lyriq, a $60,000 SUV. Due to high demand, the automaker confirmed it was forced to close the car's 2023 order book. It has announced plans to unveil three new fully electric models, whose production will begin in 2024.
A BRAVE NEW ELECTRIC FUTURE
When unveiling Lyriq's production version in April, Cadillac's global VP, Rory Harvey, announced that the brand would only release electric vehicles from now on. He did admit that his company had a fairly fresh lineup of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles that it intends to clear for the foreseeable future.
However, he noted that the company would be done with the business of ICE vehicles by the end of the decade. In his own words, "We will not be selling ICE vehicles by 2030."
This timeline puts Cadillac ahead of its parent company in terms of EV migration, with GM planning to go all-electric by 2035. The Lyriq will go into production in early 2024, with the Celestiq coming later in the year.
A QUICK GLANCE AT CADILLAC'S FIRST EV: THE 2023 CADILLAC LYRIQ
Cadillac has a knack for making cars that stand out on the road, particularly SUVs. Bold designs and an unlimited premium quotient are closely associated with the company and are the exact qualities defining the 2023 Cadillac Lyriq.
The car debuted in 2020 as a concept that showed Cadillac's direction. After some delays due to Covid-19, it is finally becoming a reality.
As a car that is built to usher in Cadillac's era of EVs, the Lyriq has an impressive design that has a sense of familiarity but still seems futuristic. Its new face, denoted by vertical LED lamps and a massive grille that spans almost the entire front area, is its most distinct feature. A rather simple side profile with a coupe-like roofline complements the dynamic front end.
The 2023 Cadillac Lyriq is available in a dual-motor and all-wheel drive and a single-motor and rear-wheel drive configuration. It comes with a 300-mile driving range and enhanced performance and handling courtesy of its unique battery platform. With the potential to deliver 340 or 550 horsepower, it is a car built for enhanced capabilities, speed, and agility.
GLIMPSES OF THE UPCOMING CADILLAC CELESTIQ EV
Cadillac first introduced the Celestiq EV model at the 2021 Consumer Electronics Show (CES). It is the first of three EV models that the brand plans to introduce in 2024. The car's starkly futuristic design showed that the automaker's engineers have been working on a genuine showstopper.
Its wind-cheating aerodynamics appear to be taking some inspiration from its fastback designs of the 1930s and 1940s. The car also features a unique door-opening experience. It does not have traditional door handles, and the doors open at the pop of a button, ensuring that the sides are neat and even.
As Cadillac's second EV, the car combines battery-powered modernity with premium luxury without neglecting the brand's American roots. It is a long, spacious sedan with touchscreens throughout, a pillar-to-pillar dashboard display, and state-of-the-art driver assistance technology.
The car is built with the passenger experience in mind. Hence, it has an ample back row with luxurious materials and features. It also suits a typical everyday driver due to its enhanced range, the rush of instant-torque acceleration, and low center of gravity.
