A world-class vehicle like a Cadillac deserves world-class care and maintenance. That's why you'll want to stay on top of oil changes to ensure your Cadillac's engine keeps performing at its best for a long time to come. So, how often should you get an oil change?

That depends on which model Cadillac you have. You'll find the recommended schedule for your particular model, along with plenty of other helpful information, in your owner's manual. Generally, you'll want to schedule an oil change at your local Cadillac dealer every 3,000 to 5,000 miles to keep your car running at peak efficiency.

The Dangers of Dirty Car Oil

Motor oil is essential for lubricating your engine's moving parts and protecting them from heat, friction, and wear. A cool, clean, well-lubricated engine will perform better for a longer time than one where regular oil changes have been neglected. You might find that your Cadillac gets even better gas mileage with regular oil changes, too!

By the way, you can't always tell if oil is dirty enough to change by its color. Some oil is already dark when first opened because it contains certain additives. Lubricating and cleaning a hard-working engine will also turn any oil dark — that's how you can tell it's doing a good job! Always change the oil in your Cadillac according to the recommended schedule rather than its color.

Recommended Oil Change Intervals

Nearly all Cadillacs now come with an Oil Life Monitor which will monitor the performance of your engine in real-time. It will then make an oil change recommendation based on that performance and the expected remaining lifespan of the oil. That one-size-fits-all oil change recommendation (every 3,000 miles/10,000 for high-quality synthetic oil) just became obsolete!

Depending on where and how you drive, the Oil Life Monitor may go ahead and recommend an oil change every 3,000 miles for a hardworking car. Or you might get up to 12,000 miles between oil changes if your Cadillac isn't driven as hard. You can maximize your oil's lifespan by not making that oil (and your engine) work so hard.

Jump starts and quick stops take a toll on both your engine and the oil inside it. Getting up to speed slowly and coasting to a stop will save wear and tear on your engine and increase the interval between oil changes. Of course, even lightly used Cadillacs will still need at least one oil change a year just because oil breaks down over time.

This new system even takes into account how you're driving your Cadillac. Performance driving, taking your Caddy off-road, or using it for heavy towing are all harder on your engine and will require more frequent oil changes. Don't worry though — the Oil Life Monitor will take that into account. A message will appear on your dashboard recommending that you "change engine oil soon".
